Protests, and the state's reaction to them, continue to escalate in Hong Kong. It was reported in October, that the Chinese special administrative region has slipped into recession, largely due to the economic effects of the protests and the subsequent fall in tourism. show a continued stark drop in visitors from China and the rest of the world. In January, there were a total of 6.8 million visitors and in September, that number was down to 3.1 million.
