Industry revenue of retail sale in non-specialised stores with food in Italy 2011-2023

Food retail in Italy is highly diversified with a strong presence of various channels including hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores, deep discount stores and specialized stores. Super and hypermarkets dominate the industry with Coop Italia, Conad, Selex, Esselunga and Europsin being the market leaders. Most of the outlets are situated in the Northern part of the country, followed by Southern and Central Italy. However, despite a strong ecosystem, industry revenues, except specialized stores, are expected to hover around the same levels during 2018-2023, decreasing marginally from 121.7 billion U.S. dollars to 121.5 billion U.S. dollars.

Retail of organic foods set to increase rapidly

As Italians follow the global trend of switching to healthier food options and the average age in the country increases, revenues related to organic foods have witnessed robust growth from 625 million Euros in 2013 to as much as 1.9 billion Euros in 2018. Interestingly, even though specialized stores are the pioneers of this sector, hypermarkets and supermarkets have slowly emerged as the leading distribution channels of organic foods in the country.
