Spain is home to Zara, the biggest retailer of apparel in the world with a brand value of over 18.4 billion U.S. dollars and over 300 stores and 12,500 employees in Spain alone. The success of Zara along with Mango and Desigual, has been key to Spain now being at the helm of the global fashion industry. Revenues generated from the retail sales of clothing are expected to increase from 23.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2017 to around 25 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. One of the reasons for this tepid growth is the cut-throat competition emanating from Asia, which resulted in many companies going out of business.

Despite this success, all is not rosy. Spanish textile firms have been slow to innovate and adapt to the rapidly changing demands of the fashion sector. According to Antonio Valdivia, professor in strategy and marketing at the EAE Business School, much of the top management at these fashion companies still operate as industrialists and not as new age entrepreneurs. This is one of the reasons why the number of manufacturers in the Spanish clothing industry have been falling consistently over the last few years.
