13/08/2019, Hamburg – More than 2 million companies are founded each year in Europe and thus form the basis for a regenerating middle class. The Statista Country Outlook deals with data relating to the most important key figures of a country and provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the European world of business start-ups.

England leading in the number of start-ups

With more than 600,000 start-ups per year, England accounts for almost a third of European start-ups and is undisputedly in the lead. Russia breaks through the 400,000 mark (including the Asian part of the country), taking second place, followed by Italy in third with around 100,000 annual start-ups. Albania, Iceland, Montenegro and Bosnia Herzegovina are the worst performers in the European comparison with fewer than 3,000 annual start-ups.

The average duration to set up a business varies widely

Even though Europe is basically united under one umbrella of regulations and basic rules, the prerequisites for start-ups in the individual countries nevertheless vary greatly. One possible obstacle to setting up a business, for example, is the length of time it takes to set up a company. Different countries have different bureaucratic requirements. The process is fastest in Georgia. It only took two days here to set up a company in 2018. With an average of 81 days, Bosnia-Herzegovina ranks last among the European countries in duration until foundation. Poland with 37 days and Romania with 35 days also lag far behind. By comparison, Germany has a rather expeditious process. It took about 8 days on average in 2018. This was not always the case. Only 10 years ago, the average duration was 17.5 days.
