Definition x-variable

In statistics, independent variables are often referred to as x-variables. This naming derives from the fact that on a Cartesian coordinate system, the independent variable is usually placed on the horizontal (x) axis.

Please note that the definitions in our statistics encyclopedia are simplified explanations of terms. Our goal is to make the definitions accessible for a broad audience; thus it is possible that some definitions do not adhere entirely to scientific standards.
