Rate of unemployment in India 2022, by education level
As per the Periodic Labour Force Survey of 2022, the unemployment rate among individuals with secondary education and above was 8.6 percent, the highest among other levels of education. Although the unemployment rate within this category fell from 9.1 percent in the previous financial year.
Unemployment made worse by pandemic
The unemployment rate has been growing in the country for the last couple of years. The rates were higher in urban areas than in rural areas and saw a similar trend among gender. The unemployment situation in the country was the major cause of worry and anxiety among many Indians. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had only accelerated the unemployment rates, and the situation is expected to improve with many joining the labor force in the days following lifting of lockdown restrictions.

India's education sector is estimated to be valued at around 117 billion U.S. dollars and it is expected to grow to 225 billion U.S. dollars by 2025. It is a growing trend for many young Indians to attain two or three degrees in the hope of attaining a job. However, many Indians are finding it difficult to find employment despite higher education degrees and qualifications. Government's skills training programmes such as PMKVY have been initiated to address these problems. However, placements under PMKVY presents a bleak picture.
