* Based on 685,000 applications. Bafa stands for Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle or Federal Office of Economics and Export Control in Germany. The scrapping program, or so-called "Abrwackprämie", was introduced by the German government in 2009 and meant to encourage car owners to scrap their older vehicles and buy a new, supposedly more environmentally friendly Euro 4 model.
