Coverage gaps in U.S. adult health insurance from 2001-2018, by gap length
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was implemented in the U.S. in March of 2010. One of the goals of the ACA was to reduce the amount of time that U.S. residents experienced gaps in their health insurance coverage. As of 2018, just 31 percent of insured U.S. adults that had a coverage gap in the past year, had a gap of 1 year or more. This is a decrease from 2012 when about 57 percent of those that had a coverage gap had a gap of 1 year or more.
