Independence Day in Mexico is an important national holiday officially celebrated on September 16th. Festivities start the evening before, when the president of Mexico re-enacts the "Grito de Independencia", an historical event that is considered the beginning of the independence movement. Celebrations include music, fireworks and lots of traditional food. However, every year a certain share of the population decides not to celebrate the date. According to a 2018 survey, the main reason given to justify the lack of celebration is having to work, or not having enough time, with 18.2 of respondents mentioning it as a main cause. That same year, 6.1 percent of respondents claimed that they will not celebrate because they don't like being in crowded places.
