Approximately 33 percent of senior high school graduates in Hokkaido Prefecture in Japan, who identify themselves as Ainu people, attended universities in 2017. In spite of a more than double increase since 1999, the figure is lower by 11 percent compared to the university enrollment rate of Hokkaido Prefecture as a whole.
Ainu people are indigenous peoples, who live mainly around the area of Hokkaido. In the Ainu Promotion Act enacted in Japan in 2019, the race was acknowledged for the first time in the history as the indigenous peoples of Japan.
