Medal count by country in the Men's Steeplechase at the Summer Olympics 1920-2020
The Men's 3,000 meter Steeplechase has been a regular event at the Summer Olympics since its introduction in 1920. In earlier years, athletes from Finland were the most successful, winning four golds, three silvers and one bronze medal between 1924 and 1936 (Finland's other medal in the event came in 1972). Between 1968 and 2016, however, Kenya emerged as the most dominant nation in this event, winning the gold medal in every tournament except in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, which Kenya boycotted. Overall, Kenyan athletes have won eleven golds and 23 total medals in the Men's 3,000 meter Steeplechase. 2020 marked the first time in almost four decades where a Kenyan did not top the podium. Two athletes have won two golds in the event, they are Finland's Volmari Iso-Hollo (1936 and 1936) and Kenya's Ezekiel Kemboi (2004 and 2012). Kenya has swept the podium on two occasions, in 1992 and 2004, while Finland and Sweden have done this once each, in 1928 and 1948 respectively. No athlete has ever been stripped of a medal won in this event.
