Brazil: companies' level of conformity to LGPD

As of March 2020, around 37 percent of companies surveyed in Brazil stated that they had policies and/or norms regarding personal data protection – which is one of the many requirements envisaged in the General Data Protection Law (LGPD, as abbreviated in Portuguese), set to go into full effect in August 2021. Less than 14 percent of the companies surveyed were mapping risks in data protection and information security.

Brazil's General Data Protection Law (LGPD, as abbreviated in Portuguese) passed on July 2019 to govern personal data both online and offline. It requires, for instance, companies to be transparent about how they intend to use consumers' data, and establishes fines in cases of misuse and leaking. It is set to go into full effect in August 2021.
