Value of Chinese loans to Kenya, by sector 2000-2019
Kenya borrowed 9.2 billion U.S. dollars from China in the period between 2000 and 2019. From this total, 6.1 billion U.S. dollars were invested in the transport sector. Among the projects in the area, the construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, as well as the extension to Naivasha, stood out. Built with credit obtained from the China Exim Bank, the railway is considered the most expensive infrastructure project in Kenya since independence.
