Installed power generation capacity in Africa 2019, by energy source
As of 2019, natural gas was the leading source of energy in Africa, with a total installed power generation capacity of nearly 108 thousand megawatts (MW). Coal and hydropower followed, having an installed capacity of around 48.3 thousand and 35.7 thousand MW, respectively. Despite the prevalence of fossil resources in energy production, there were significant variations among the regions of the continent. East and Central Africa had a higher installed capacity of renewables, while North Africa was the most reliant on fossil fuels as of 2019.
