Cost and duration of internet shutdowns in Russia 2022-2023
At the end of February 2022, the Russian government started blocking several social media platforms in the country due to their actions in relation to the Russia-Ukraine war, such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. The total cost of social media shutdowns in that year amounted to around 21.6 billion U.S. dollars. In the following year, the cost amounted to four billion U.S. dollars. Russia's internet shutdowns were the most costly worldwide in 2022. The total duration of shutdowns in 2022 exceeded 7,400 hours.
