Refugees and asylum seekers in the Sahel 2021, by country
The Sahel is experiencing one of the largest humanitarian crises. Violence, climate change, and food insecurity have forced around three million people to flee. Indeed, this region has about 2.5 million internally displaced people, over 900 thousand refugees and asylum seekers, and almost 700 thousand returnees in need of assistance. In September 2021, Chad counted 528 thousand refugees and asylum seekers, the highest number among the five countries taken into analysis. Niger, by its turn, had some 253 thousand refugees and asylum seekers, the second highest amount in the region.
