Share of companies pledging to decarbonize shipping

As of August 2022, 47 percent of the 30 largest shipping companies have had pledged to reach net zero GHG emissions by 2050 or follow the IMO strategy* to reduce GHG emissions. The container segment showed the highest degree of commitment with 57 percent of the companies adapting the net zero targets or pledging to the IMO strategy.

The 30 largest ship owners by segment were identified based on their fleets capacity in dead weight tons (DWT).
Some companies are represented in more than one segment, resulting in a total of 74 companies included in the analysis.

*The IMO strategy includes the following non-binding objectives: improving the design efficiency of existing and new-build ships, reducing GHG emissions by 50% and fully decarbonize "as soon as possible in this century", and reducing emissions intensity by 2030.
