Share of electricity production Africa 2021 without Egypt and South Africa, by source
As of 2021, natural gas was Africa's leading electricity source. Moreover, when removing South Africa and Egypt from the equation, natural gas remained the main source of electricity generation, with around 45 percent. However, electricity coming from hydroelectric sources overtook coal as the second source, jumping from 17 percent to 31 percent, while coal dropping from 28 percent to nine percent. This can be connected to South Africa's huge dependence on coal for electricity generation.
