Results of the Palestinian legislative council election 2006, by party
In the legislative council election for the Palestinian territories (Westbank and Gaza) in 2006, Hamas received 56.1 percent of the votes. As a result, Hamas took over 45 of the 66 legislative council seats in the Palestinian territories. Previously, the political leadership of the Palestinian territories was held by Fatah/PLO. This led to an internal conflict between Fatah and Hamas, which turned into the Palestinian civil war of 2006 to 2007. As a consequence, Hamas took complete control over the Gaza Strip, leaving the West Bank under the control of Fatah. The 2006 election was the last in the Palestinian territories, including Gaza.
