In 2023, stage four was the most common stage of load shedding in South Africa, adding up to a total of 80 days. Stages three and six followed, with 74 days and 45 days of power cuts, respectively. At stage six, consumers were left without power for four to six hours per day.

Load shedding is controlled power cuts for a set period of time due to not having enough power capacity to fulfil demand. This aims to reduce the load on the power grid to avoid a total blackout.

Stage 1:1000 MW is shed nationally. Occurs three times over four days for two hours or three times over eight days for four hours.

Stage 2: 2000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs six times over four days for two hours or six times over eight days for four hours.

Stage 3: 3000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs nine times over four days for two hours or nine times over eight days for four hours.

Stage 4: 4000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs 12 times over four days for two hours or 12 times over eight days for four hours.

Stage 5: 5000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs nine times for two hours and three times for four hours over four days.

Stage 6: 6000 MW to be shed nationally. Occurs six times for two hours and six times for four hours over four days.
