Advertising spending in the U.S. 2019-2023, by medium In 2019, the United States spent roughly 123 billion on internet ads, making it the largest advertising medium by far that year. By 2023, internet ad spending is projected to increase by approximately 23 percent, while spending on other ad streams, for example, newspapers and consumer magazines, is set to decrease.

Ad spending vs. consumer time spent

In 2018, the percentage of time consumers spent on mobile was equal to the rate of ad spending in the United States, which was 33 percent. U.S. advertisers’ print ad spending share stood at seven percent, which indicates a loss, as consumers only spent three percent of their time reading printed media, such as newspapers and magazines.

North American ad spending

The United States is responsible for the majority of ad expenditures within North America. The entire continent is projected to have spent a total of 126 billion U.S. dollars on internet advertising in 2019. Within the same year, North American companies will have spent close to 19 billion on radio ads, an amount that is projected to remain relatively stable in the coming years.
