Foreign tourist arrivals in India - additional information

Between the years 2000 and 2016, foreign tourist arrivals in India increased dramatically from 2.65 million to 8.8 million. Figures increased year-on-year apart from in 2001/2002 and 2009 when they dipped slightly. These decreases may have been due to the recessions that occurred during those years. It is likely that the number of arrivals in India will increase further in the future with the World Travel and Tourism Council naming the country the eleventh fastest-emerging tourism destination in the world. According to the organization, travel and tourism’s total contribution to India’s GDP will increase by 6.4 percent annually from 2014 to 2024.

The largest source market for foreign tourist arrivals in India in 2015 was the United States, providing more than one million visitors. The U.S. was followed by Bangladesh and the United Kingdom. In 2016, the travel and tourism industry made a total contribution of 208.9 billion U.S. dollars to India’s GDP.

Outbound tourism from India is growing, too. During a 14-year period, the number of outbound Indian nationals increased by over 17 million, from 4.42 million in 2000 to 21.87 million in 2016. Approximately 1.13 million people from India visited the United States in 2015. In 2016, 2.39 million Indian tourists visited Europe, their favorite region being Western Europe, including countries such as France and Germany.
