Domestic travel spending - additional information
Within the next few years, residents of the United States are expected to spend more money on domestic travel. From around 480 billion U.S. dollars in 2002, domestic travel spending is forecasted to be more than double that by 2022.
According to a cost comparison study by TripAdvisor in 2016, Orlando was the priciest U.S. city for vacation, with an average cost of 2,217 U.S. dollars for a three day trip, followed closely by Honolulu. During the same survey, TripAdvisor revealed New Orleans as the least expensive city in the United States, where the average cost of a three day trip amounted to 1,148 U.S. dollars in 2016.
In a recent study, travel agent members of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) forecasted Orlando as the most popular domestic summer destination for U.S. travelers in 2015. During the summer months, accommodation prices in Orlando are generally lower in comparison to the rest of the year. July saw the highest accommodation prices for the summer travel season in 2016, at an average of 142 U.S. dollars per night.
A major highlight of the American vacation travel calendar is the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day. New Orleans, one of the most popular domestic Fourth of July destinations, had the highest airfares in the United States. Average airfare costs to New Orleans stood at 493 U.S. dollars during the holiday weekend, while average airfare to Orlando amounted to approximately 333 U.S. dollars.
