People in Portugal consume more wine than any other country worldwide, according to a study of 2021. In that year, the European country reached an annual per capita consumption of nearly 52 liters. Following in the list was France, with wine lovers consuming around 47 liters of wine on average that year.

In addition to having the third highest per capita wine consumption, Italy produces more wine than any other country in the world. In 2022, the production volume of Italian wine amounted to more than 49 million hectoliters. In comparison, the largest non-European wine producer, the United States, occupied the fourth position that year with less than half of that figure.

The most popular varieties of wine among Americans who drink wine are Merlot, Chardonnay, and Cabernet.
