Netflix peak period downstream traffic share 2011-2016
This statistic gives information on Netflix's share of peak period downstream internet traffic volume in North America from 2010 to 2015. In the third quarter of 2015, Netflix's penetration rate in the U.S. amounted to 51 percent among internet users.

Video on demand

With more than 48 million streaming subscribers, Netflix is one of the leading streaming service providers worldwide. Netflix’s popularity is an example of the increasingly mainstream appeal of video-on-demand services and streaming media content consumption. The legal availability of high-quality and current series and movie content, as well as a growing amount of original programming, has proven a popular concept, especially with TV households which cancelled their TV subscriptions - so-called cord-cutters or binge-viewers.

Recent figures indicate that 53 percent of global internet users have watched television shows through VoD services. In the United States, 83 percent of video on demand consumers had watched movie content on VoD.

The increasing popularity of online video will lead to an increase of online traffic. Thanks to smart tvs, apps and other connected devices, VoD content is not only consumed via computer but increasingly in the comfort of viewers’ living rooms. In 2018, global internet video to tv traffic is projected to surpass 7,500 petabytes per month.
