Bonded wineries in the U.S. 2022, by state
An ideal location for wine making
California’s climate and landscape make it particularly well suited to growing wine grapes. The state receives year-round sunshine and its varied landscape supports a variety of wine grapes. The coast mixes the warm inland air with cool ocean breezes ideal for cooler climate varieties such as Pinot Noir, while sun-loving varieties like Merlot find their home on the drier hillsides. Chardonnay was the most crushed grape variety in Californian wine production in 2022, accounting for 14.4 percent of all wine grapes. On the other hand, red wine grapes were overall the most crushed type in the state, with around 1.9 million tons of red wine grapes crushed in 2022.
