Construction, generally defined as the process of creating infrastructure or buildings, is associated to a variety of different sectors including residential, commercial, environmental and energy, industrial, transportation and defense. The construction industry makes a major contribution to generating value to and creating jobs in the European economy. In 2015, European-based construction contractors generated revenue streams of around 2.12 billion U.S. dollars, making it the second largest construction market worldwide.

The French construction company, Vinci, was founded in 1899 by Alexandre Giros and Louis Loucher and is headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison in France. The company employs more than 200 people and has a large portfolio of building and engineering projects around the globe. In 2016, Vinci reported earnings amounting to approximately 38.1 billion euros. That year, Vinci was by far the leading construction company within Europe in terms of sales, followed by its closest competitor, the ACS Construction Group.
