France - primary energy consumption by fuel 2010-2018

Primary energy consumption in France between 2010 and 2018, by fuel (in million metric tons of oil equivalent)

by R. Samso, last edited Nov 22, 2019
France - primary energy consumption by fuel 2010-2018 Between 2010 and 2018, the total consumption of primary energy in France decreased from 251.8 to 237.9 million metric tons of oil equivalent. In 2017, the consumption of renewable energy in France amounted to 9.4 million metric tons of oil equivalent. The consumption of nuclear energy in France reached its peak in 2011, with 100 million metric tons of oil equivalent.
France is reducing its consumption of nuclear energy at a slower pace than Germany

Even after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 and the ensuing acceleration of the nuclear power phase-out in Germany, the consumption of nuclear energy in France has decreased but not as significantly as in other European countries. In Germany, for example, the consumption of nuclear energy went from 24.4 in 2011 to 17.2 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2017. The consumption trend of renewable energy in Germany is also positive but goes at a much faster pace than in France: it jumped from an initial level of 16.9 in 2009 to 44.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2017.

The reduction of nuclear energy consumption is not a global trend

While France and Germany make efforts to reduce their consumption of nuclear energy, countries such as China and the United States do not seem to follow the same trend. It is expected that the United States, responsible for 30 percent of the worldwide nuclear generation of electricity, will expand its capacities by building two new nuclear reactors by 2020. The United States’ consumption of nuclear energy has only marginally changed between 2010 and 2017: 192.2 in 2010 and 191.7 million metric tons of oil equivalent in 2017. Although China’s nuclear energy consumption is lower than in the United States, it progressed from 16.7 in 2010 to 56.2 million tons of oil equivalent in 2017.
