The statistic shows the countries with the highest number of national bankruptcies worldwide since 1990 as of 2011. The South American countries Brazil and Chile lead the ranking with seven national bankruptcies. Brazil and Chile announced their final national bankruptcies in 1983.

A total of 135 national bankruptcies were registered worldwide since 1900 (including some countries more than once). Germany recorded a national bankruptcies in 1932 and 1939.

A national bankruptcy is a cessation of overdue payments or a formal declaration of government, that overdue receivables are no longer achievable or only partially achievable.
