The health and fitness club market has been growing constantly in the past decades, reaching estimated global revenues of 78 billion U.S. dollars in 2013, some ten billion more than in 2009. In 2013 the United States market alone was valued at over 22 billion U.S. dollars and was expected to grow to more than 30 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2020.

As of 2013, there were more than 165 thousand health and fitness clubs worldwide, with the United States and Brazil accounting for more than 30 thousand each. The United States also lead in a ranking of countries with most gym members, with some 52.9 million fitness club members, approximately six times more than the second ranked, Germany. 24 Hour Fitness is the biggest fitness clubs chain in the world (by memberships) with almost a million members in 16 countries. It is also the most profitable gym globally, with 1.3 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2013. Gold's Gym International, originally founded in California in 1965 by fitness revolutionary figure Joe Gold, is the biggest chain in terms of number of clubs, with more than 700 locations around the globe.

Due to an increasingly competitive market, fitness centers are striving to provide the newest technologies and a diverse range of services, like pools, saunas and spas, personal trainers, food courts and child centers. Another way to insure success is keeping up with the latest training trends, such as Yoga and Pilates , Zumba, Kangoo Jumps, Power plates or Crossfit. Some gyms also offer team sports, outdoor sports, competitions and even boot camps.
