Number of employees in the U.S. automotive industry from 2007 to 2019, by sector (in 1,000s)*
Automotive industry: number of employees by sector 2007-2019
Motor vehicle and parts dealers in the United States had some two million employees on their payrolls in March 2019. Employment in this subsector has never been higher, which is probably a result of a strong light vehicle sales market. New light vehicle sales peaked in 2018, while sales of used light vehicles reached near-record levels in that same year. However, the thriving light vehicle sales market failed to have a positive effect on U.S. domestic auto production, which was down 10 percent between 2017 and 2018. This fact notwithstanding, the number of motor vehicles and parts manufacturing employees amounted to some 1,004,000 people in March 2019, up from about 1,001,400 in March 2018.

 Online interactions matter

Various surveys have shown that customer retention and satisfaction levels correlate with a dealership’s ability to integrate new technologies. It is particularly the younger customers who are quick to embrace options such as online appointment scheduling or the availability of online payment services. Ultimately, there are also risks that can be tied to these technological advancements, as artificial intelligence might make large numbers of auto dealers obsolete. The same thing can be said about assembly line workers who are at risk of being replaced by industrial robots.
