China has become one of the largest markets for automotive vehicles worldwide. From 2000 to 2013, the market share of China in global light vehicle sales had experienced an eightfold increase from three percent in 2000 to 25 percent in 2013, and is predicted to reach 29 percent by 2020. Meanwhile, vehicle sales in China went up significantly and the annual growth rate varied over the period from 2008 to 2014, reaching a peak of 45 percent in 2009. As of 2014, China’s monthly trade revenue of automobiles had amounted to 3.3 trillion yuan, with monthly revenues ranging from 250 to 370 billion yuan.

Currently, international car brands dominate China´s auto market. During a Nielsen survey in 2013, about 81 percent of respondents had stated that their recently purchased car was of foreign brand origin. In 2013, approximately 1.2 million cars had been imported to China, while in 2006 this number had reached a mere 0.2 million.

Within passenger car sales in China, sedan models made up the largest share in 2013 with 12 million sold cars, compared to a total of about 18 million passenger cars sold.
