Payment cards in circulation, by brand 2027

The combined global number of general purpose and private label payment cards in circulation is projected to reach well over 28 billion come 2027. Private label cards — such as fuel cards, retail branded cards, etc. — will make up roughly 30 percent of this market. In terms of individual card schemes, China's UnionPay is expected to be bigger than Visa and Mastercard combined as digital payments will continue to increase in Asia-Pacific. Domestic card schemes — which take up a significant market share in Europe — are also projected to increase.
