In 2017, the Swiss food and beverage producer Nestlé spent 7.2 billion U.S. dollars on global advertising efforts. This figure was two billion dollars lower than a year earlier, indicating a slightly more conservative marketing budget. In fact, the company’s financial reporting confirms this shift, as the Nestlé Group’s administration and marketing expenses dropped in the same time period by roughly 1.6 billion Swiss francs (approximately 1.6 billion U.S. dollars).

Nestlé has a wide range of products including bottled water, coffee, baby food, cereal, microwave meals, and even pet food. While the flagship products such as Nescafé, KitKat, Gerber, and Coffee-Mate are widely recognized in and outside the U.S., on a global scale Nestlé’s brand fails to match up, ranking lower than the leading 50. However, in terms of promotional spending Nestlé has a fairly strong position among other prominent advertisers, holding its position in the top five worldwide in 2017 among names such as Unilever and Procter & Gamble. Nestlé is also a prominent magazine advertiser in the United States, with print expenses reaching 152 million U.S. dollars.
