This statistic shows a distribution of the number of retail sales transactions made in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2009 to 2014, by transaction type. Although cash payments still dominate, there was a slight reduction in 2014 in the share of transactions made in cash, while debit card and non-card payments increased share.

* Total responses in 2014 represent 333 billion GBP or 56 percent of total retail sales transactions in the UK, from more than 18,500 shops (all types) and around 6.6 percent via the internet, mobile or mail-order channels.
Total number of transactions for each year is as follows:
2009 = 7,315 million

2011 = 9,368 million
2012 = 9,923 million
2013 = 10,627 million
2014 = 10,920 million
