This statistic shows the trend in entries for European languages at Standard Grade level as a percentage of the total number of learners in the academic year 2012/2013.
In most schools, pupils were required to take at least one language other than English, though not necessarily a European one.
In 2009 French was nearly four times more popular than its closest rival, German, whereas by 2013 it had become nearly five times more popular. However the number of entries for both French and German
decreased over this five year period.
