Gini index for income distribution equality for U.S. households 1990-2018 This statistic shows the income inequality of households in the United states from 1990 to 2018, based on the Gini index. The U.S. Census Bureau defines the Gini index as “a statistical measure of income inequality ranging from 0 to 1. A measure of 1 indicates perfect inequality, i.e., one household having all the income and rest having none. A measure of 0 indicates perfect equality, i.e., all households having an equal share of income.” In 2018, U.S. households had a Gini index of 0.49.
