From 2000 to 2022, the majority of active shooters in elementary and secondary schools in the United States were aged between 12 to 18 years, with 35 active shooters included in this age group. In comparison, the majority of active shooters at postsecondary institutions in the United States were aged 25 years and above. According to the FBI, an active shooter is defined as "one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area."
