UK: awareness of smart meters 2021

The majority of UK residents are aware of smart meter programs. A 2021 survey conducted by the UK Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) found that 47 percent of respondents have a smart meter installed, which represents a considerable increase compared to the six percent figures in March 2012.

Smart meters are next-generation electricity and gas meters, with a direct link between the meter and the energy supplier. This is intended to eliminated estimated energy bills and allow consumers to better monitor their energy consumption.

Survey methodology up to March 2020 was a Kantar face-to-face omnibus survey. In March 2021, a temporary Kantar online panel type of survey was introduced, which was not based on a random sample of respondents. Due to a change in survey methodology, the source states that direct comparisons between time series is not possible.
