The Canadian retail trade industry has been constantly growing since 2012. In 2017, sales of retail trade increased by 5.8 percent - reportedly its best performance over the last five years. Increasing sales had also been recorded in all regions and subsectors that year.
Motor vehicle and parts dealers contributed approximately 25 percent to the total retail sales in Canada in 2015, followed by food and beverage stores with almost 22 percent collectively. New car dealers generated more than 126 billion Canadian dollars in retail sales in 2017. The big three automobile brands Ford, Toyota and Honda sold over 38,000 vehicles in Canada in January 2019. Gasoline stations comprised the fourth largest retail subsector in terms of retail sales.
Canada’s most populated provinces, Ontario and Quebec, accounted for the largest share of the country’s retail sales. According to Statistics Canada, while consumers elsewhere in Canada spent more money on cars than on food, food and beverage stores in Ontario saw more sales than new and used car dealers combined. General merchandise stores had higher retail sales than gasoline stations in this province too.
