Number of hospital beds in the United States by hospital size 2017

Number of beds in registered hospitals in the U.S. in 2017, by hospital size

by John Elflein, last edited Sep 16, 2019
Number of hospital beds in the United States by hospital size 2017 Hospitals across the U.S. have been decreasing the number of hospitals beds available. With increasing concerns about the cost of health care, less traditional services and shorter stays have become the norm. The number of beds available in the U.S. greatly depends on the hospital size. As of 2017 there were a total of about 240 thousand hospital beds available in hospitals with a 500 bed capacity or greater.

U.S. Hospitals

Like the decrease in number of hospital beds, there has been a steady decline in the overall number of hospitals in the U.S. since 1975. Hospitals in the U.S. are becoming increasingly more technological with things like remote patient monitoring and AI. Despite being an important factor in patient health and wellbeing, patients don’t value the up-to-dateness of technology in hospitals as highly as they value other aspects.

Hospital rankings

Hospitals are ranked across the U.S. in a variety of ways. Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami was ranked as the top hospital in 2017 according to the number of beds they had. However, Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, Florida had the most annual emergency visits during that same year. And, finally, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was ranked as the number one hospital based on the number of organ transplants performed in the last 30 years.
