Rail freight as road distance equivalent Great Britain 2016

This statistic shows how many billions of kilometres that would have had to be travelled by road in order to transport the same amount of freight that was carried by rail each year between 2005/06 and 2015/16. This is an important indicator of the efficiency of rail freight transport as it reflects the impact on road traffic that was spared by transporting goods by train. The amount of freight transported by train during the financial year 2011/12 would have travelled a total distance of 2.1 billion kilometres if transported by road vehicles instead of by rail.
