Even though some tablets were developed in the late 90s, this type of device only gained popularity after the launch of the Apple iPad in 2010. For 2016, the worldwide number of tablet users is projected to reach around 1.15 billion, resulting in a global penetration rate of 15.7 percent.

In line with the global trend, the number of tablet users in Canada is also expected to grow. In 2013, there were 11.6 million tablet users in the country. This figure is forecast to pass the 17 million mark by 2018. More than 20 percent of Canadian tablet owners use search engines on their devices on a weekly basis. Checking emails and watching online videos are also common activities a tablet is used for.

In Canada, the use of tablets and smartphones registered a significant growth in the pastfew years. Between 2010 and 2013, the share of the population that uses a tablet jumped from three percent to 39 percent; the smartphone user share rose from 24 percent to 62 percent in the same period. The number of smartphone users in Canada is estimated to reach 23.9 million by 2018. In comparison to these two mobile devices, the overall mobile phone market registered modest growth. In 2010, 72 percent of the Canadian population used mobile phones. This figure had increased to 83 percent by 2013.
