Turkey produced 2.7 million metric tons of sulfur oxides (SOx) emissions in 2021. This made Turkey the largest producer of sulfur oxides emissions of all OECD countries that year. Australia ranked second, with emissions totaling 2.2 million metric tons. Sulfur oxides and nitrogen compounds can transform into sulfuric and nitric acids that can cause the acidification of aquatic and terrestrial systems.
