Greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas industry in Canada 1990-2020, by type

Canada's oil sands production released over 85 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2021 – a nearly six-fold increase in comparison to 1990 levels. On site oil sands production accounted for almost a quarter of the Canadian oil and gas industry's GHG emissions in 2021, compared with less than five percent in 1990.
