Total electricity generation capacity in the United Kingdom (UK) 2018 to 2035

As the UK gradually moves away from fossil fuel reliance, it is no coincidence that electricity from renewables is expected to increase. Projections indicate that by 2035, almost 50 percent of the total electricity generation capacity of major power producers will be from renewable sources. Although coal generated electricity is expected to cease completely by 2023, natural gas is still expected to play a significant role in the UK.

Renewable capacity
A lot can be owed to the wind power sector for the increase in renewable electricity generation and capacity. The capacity of both onshore and offshore wind energy has been increasing annually since 2010, with the onshore capacity consistently higher. In 2017, the combined renewable capacity share of these energy sources amounted to almost 50 percent.

Nuclear power uncertainty

In 2018, Nuclear power provided approximately 8 percent of the UK generation capacity, with projections for 2035 showing an increase. However, there is uncertainty around the sector, with power plants nearing the end of their cycle and new projects scrapped. In November 2018, Toshiba withdrew from the Mooreside nuclear power station project, and Hitachi suspended work on the Wylfa project in Anglesey, North Wales in January 2019.

The figures are projections.
Projected data is taken from the reference scenario, which is based on central estimates of economic growth and fossil fuel prices and contains all agreed policies where decisions on policy design are sufficiently advanced to allow robust estimates of impact (i.e. including "planned" policies).
