Number of deaths in Sweden 2008-2018

The number of deaths in Sweden has not been varying much during the period, but the highest number of deaths occurred in 2018, when almost 92 thousand individuals died. In this year, there was a higher number of deaths among women than men. Just over 47 thousand women died, while the number for men dying was almost 45 thousand.

The most common cause of death

      The most common cause of death in 2017 was diseases of the circulatory system (cardiovascular diseases), which caused just over 31 thousand deaths. This was followed by neoplasms (cancerous tumors) and diseases of the respiratory system.  

Ischemic heart disease

      Among the diseases in the circulatory system, the one that caused the most deaths was chronic ischemic heart disease. Chronic ischemic heart disease is when the blood flow to the heart is reduced, due to that the arteries of the heart are blocked. In 2017, 59.6 per hundred thousand inhabitants died due to ischemic heart disease.
