Expenditure on elderly care in Sweden 2016-2020
Highest expenditure for special housing
The largest amount of the total expenditure for elderly care in 2018 was for special housing, a sum that amounted to 71.8 billion Swedish kronor. Elderly care in Sweden is administered at a municipal level, and therefore the special housing can look different for different municipalities, but the definition is housing for elderly with a large need for care, who are not able to live alone.
Elderly are a growing population
In 2018, 19.9 percent of the Swedish population was 65 years and older. 5.1 percent was 80 years and older, and one percent was 90 years and older. It is expected that the largest percentual increase of the population in Sweden until 2028 will occur among individuals 80 years and older.
