U.S. sales of natural and organic pet food 2009-2019
What is the difference between natural and organic pet food?
For a pet food to be labeled “natural” it must be free from artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. “Organic” pet food must also be made without antibiotics, synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides and preservatives. Pet food can also be partially organic if only some of the ingredients fit these qualifications. According to a recent survey, 50 percent of U.S. consumers agreed that natural and organic pet foods are batter than standard national brand products.
The wider pet food market
The American pet food market is expected to be worth approximately 30.01 billion U.S. dollars by 2022. Dry dog food is the highest selling segment of the pet food industry in the United States: in 2018, sales reached around 5.15 billion U.S. dollars. Dry and wet cat food ranked in second and third places, with sales of around 2.35 and 2.12 million dollars respectively.
