Tencent’s investments in gaming – additional information

Tencent, one of China’s largest internet companies, operates three large social and messaging platforms, all with hundreds of millions of users. Best known as Tencent’s biggest asset in its rivalry with Alibaba, its messaging app WeChat had more than 760 million users as of the first quarter of 2016, placing fifth in number of active users as one of the leading social networks worldwide. Positioned as China’s most valuable public internet company, Tencent plans to leverage the app’s reach among China’s smartphone users to push its own services against Alibaba’s competing offerings.

Annual revenue of Tencent has been on the rise since 2007 and reached over 100 billion yuan in 2015, around half of which was generated by its online gaming operations. The company has funded or purchased gaming companies in or outside China in recent years. Its most high-profile gaming investments include the 330 million U.S. dollar venture in Epic Games, maker of popular PC titles such as Unreal Tournament, and a 232 million U.S. dollar purchase of a controlling stake in Riot Games, maker of League of Legends. Tencent investments are expected to strengthen its portfolio also in mobile games in the future, alongside PC titles. Pocket Gems and Glu Mobile, for example, are two successful smartphone games companies that Tencent funded in the United States.
